The useful answer first

01Never snorkel alone
02Ask about current wind, waves and entry points
03Practice mask breathing in shallow water
04Do not touch coral or wildlife

Choose an easy first site

Look for a managed beach or operator that can explain the day's conditions, entry and exit. A beautiful remote cove is not automatically the best place to learn, particularly when rocks, current or boat traffic are unfamiliar.

Tell the rental desk or guide honestly that you are a beginner. Ask where to stay close to shore and what visual landmark should tell you to turn back.

Fit the equipment before entering

A mask should seal comfortably without being painfully tight. The snorkel mouthpiece should feel easy to hold, and fins should not pinch or slip. Practice breathing with your face in shallow water before swimming away.

If water enters the mask or you feel anxious, stand or float safely, reset and try again. There is no prize for continuing while uncomfortable.

Use a buddy and a turnaround point

Stay close enough to communicate. Agree on a route and turn back while both people still feel strong. Wind and surface movement can make the return more tiring than the outward swim.

Keep clear of marked boat lanes and follow local instructions. If conditions change, leave the water even if the planned session was longer.

Be a guest underwater

Coral is living habitat. Keep your body horizontal, control your fins and never stand on reef. Watch turtles and fish without chasing, feeding or surrounding them.

  • Take only photographs
  • Leave shells and marine life where they are
  • Secure loose equipment
  • Follow beach and marine-park rules
  • Choose a guided session when unsure

Your best first snorkel may be only twenty minutes. Finish feeling confident and curious enough to go again.
